How Many Golf Clubs Can You Carry in Your Bag?

February 1, 2021

A golfer is allowed to carry 14 clubs in their bag at one time.

Golf is a game that many people have played for years. Whether you are new to the game or not, it's important to know the maximum amount of clubs you can carry in your golf bag. This is especially important if you are planning on playing in a tournament.

Who sets the rules?

The United States Golf Association (USGA) are the body that set the rules and regulations for golfing in the United States. The USGA limit is set at 14 clubs, however, not all players choose to carry 14 clubs in their bag.

If you are looking to play on a course that offers 18 holes of golf it would be best if you had two configurations for your set of clubs - one for 18 and one for 9.

What is the penalty for having more than 14 clubs?

The penalty for having more than 14 golf clubs can vary for different formats. Any additional club must be declared out of play once you realise the mistake. The player will take a two stroke penalty for each hole the additional club was used.

Are there any restrictions on the types of clubs you can use?

The USGA states that the standard 12 clubs you should have in your bag is three woods (including Driver), eight irons and a putter. You can then choose any 2 additional clubs on top of that.

Are there any exceptions to how many golf clubs you can carry?

If a player wishes to use an additional club, that player must inform their playing partners of this before play starts. The club cannot be used until after all players have played their first shot from the next teeing ground or fairway area.
