01 · Overview
Why Anstruther Golf Club matters
~2 min read
Anstruther Golf Club occupies a narrow strip of Fife coastline where the land drops sharply to the Firth of Forth, and where nine holes — played twice for a full round — add up to something considerably larger than 4,690 yards might suggest. At a green fee of £35, it offers an uncommonly honest encounter with Scottish links golf.
The club was formed at Anstruther Wester Town Hall in November 1890, and the course opened the following spring as a seven-hole layout at the Billowness. Two years of expansion brought it to nine holes, and in 1896 Old Tom Morris advised the club to acquire additional land at the Hynd — his counsel leading directly to the holes that now open and close the card. That heritage sits lightly on the place, but it is real: the old clubhouse buildings still stand alongside the 3rd and 4th fairways, one of them now housing a water tank.
The ground itself is compact and exposed. The routing pushes out along the shore before looping back across higher ground, and on any day with wind — which is most days — club selection becomes a matter of judgment rather than arithmetic. Several holes play directly over or alongside rocky outcroppings and tidal shoreline, and the remnants of wartime coastal defences give the course an unsentimental, matter-of-fact quality that matches the fishing town it belongs to.
What makes Anstruther genuinely difficult is not length but angle and exposure. The 5th hole, 'The Rockies,' was voted the toughest par 3 in the UK by Today's Golfer in 2007 — a claim that European Tour professional Andrew 'Beef' Johnston appeared to validate when he failed to make par there during a DP World Tour feature filmed on site in 2024. The rest of the card is no pushover either, and a course rating of 63.4 on a layout measuring under 4,700 yards tells its own story about how wind and terrain do the work that distance cannot.
THE TURF
Firm and fast
True links fescue over thin coastal soil, running firm when dry and demanding precise ground-game thinking. The ball rarely sits up on a cushion here.
THE WIND
Exposure on every shot
Sitting unguarded on the Firth of Forth, Anstruther has no shelter to speak of. The prevailing south-westerly can transform a 128-yard hole into a genuine puzzle and a 237-yard par 3 into something close to unreachable.
THE SHORELINE
Rock and sea in play
Several holes play directly alongside or over the rocky Firth of Forth coastline. Errant shots do not simply find rough — they find stone, tide, and the end of the conversation.
THE HISTORY
Old Tom's counsel
Old Tom Morris advised on the course layout in 1896, and the bones of his recommended expansion remain visible in the first and ninth holes today. Wartime earthworks and Victorian-era outbuildings add further layers.

7 questions · sourced from 8 vlogs
How do I book a tee time at Anstruther?
Visitors are welcome seven days a week, though Saturday mornings are typically reserved for member competitions. You can book directly through the club or via GolfNow. Note that tee times before 10 AM can only be reserved up to seven days in advance.
What does it cost to play Anstruther Golf Club?
As of the most recent published rates, a full 18-hole round (two loops of the 9-hole course) costs £35 for visitors. A single 9-hole round is £20. These represent exceptional value for a genuine links experience in Fife.
Is Anstruther a 9-hole or 18-hole course?
Anstruther is a 9-hole course that is played twice for a full round of 18 holes. The par for a full round is 62, with a course rating of 63.4 and a slope of 103. The second loop plays the same nine holes but feels meaningfully different as wind direction and light change.
How hard is The Rockies, the 5th hole?
It is widely regarded as one of the most demanding short holes in Scotland. Today's Golfer voted it the toughest par 3 in the UK in 2007. The hole plays up to 237 yards over rocky shoreline to a semi-hidden green with the Firth of Forth immediately left, and the prevailing wind frequently makes the nominal yardage irrelevant. European Tour player Andrew 'Beef' Johnston famously failed to make par there during a filmed visit in 2024.
Where should I stay when playing Anstruther?
Anstruther itself has several comfortable guest houses, including The Waterfront and The Spindrift, and is a pleasant fishing town worth an evening. St Andrews, about nine miles north, offers a wider range of accommodation including the Old Course Hotel and Rusacks for those inclined toward grander lodging.
Is Anstruther walking only, or are carts available?
Anstruther is a traditional walking links. The compact and often steep coastal terrain is best experienced on foot, and the course is short enough that a round is rarely an endurance test in terms of distance. Buggies are not a standard feature of the experience here.
How does Anstruther compare to other Fife links courses?
Anstruther is shorter and less well-known than its East Neuk neighbours at Crail and Elie, and it shares nothing of the championship pedigree of St Andrews. What it offers instead is an unusually raw and direct coastal encounter — fewer facilities, no pretension, and a genuinely fearsome par 3 in The Rockies that holds its own against anything in the region.
