Carlsbad, California, United States · Botanical Garden
Arnold Palmer's only coastal signature design in Southern California — where 73 bunkers, botanical landscaping, and oversized greens conspire against a comfortable round.
Aviara Golf Club sits on the hills above Batiquitos Lagoon in Carlsbad, roughly 32 miles north of San Diego, and earns its unofficial nickname honestly. Flowering plants and manicured landscaping frame nearly every hole, making the course look less like a test of golf and more like a walk through a well-tended preserve. Beneath that beauty, however, lies one of the more demanding resort layouts in Southern California.
Arnold Palmer, working with design partner Ed Seay and lead field architect Harrison Minchew, opened the course on July 13, 1991. It remains the only coastal Arnold Palmer signature design in Southern California — a distinction the club holds with some pride. A construction error during the early build led to the greens being completed at roughly double their intended size before the mistake was caught. Rather than rebuild them, the team pressed on. Those large, undulating putting surfaces became the course's most consequential defense, and they remain so today.
The routing moves through rolling coastal terrain, shifting between downhill risk-reward par 5s and long, exposed par 4s that require two honest shots. Water appears on more than half the holes, often as ponds or streams that borrow their visual character from the lagoon below. Seventy-three bunkers distribute the load evenly — there are few stretches of the card where precision can be deferred. The course carries a slope rating of 144 from the back tees and a course rating of 75.0, numbers that reflect its genuine difficulty.
Since 2013, Aviara has served as the longtime venue of the LPGA's Kia Classic (later the JTBC Classic), hosting the tour annually until 2022. The competitive record of 62 — shot by both M.J. Hur and Hyo Joo Kim during the 2019 edition — gives some indication of what a professional in form can do with the course when conditions cooperate. For the recreational golfer, 7,007 yards under a Southern California sky tends to produce quite different arithmetic.
THE GREENS
Oversized and undulating
Built at twice their intended area following a construction error, the putting surfaces are the course's primary defense. Tiers and slope create putts that demand local knowledge.
THE BUNKERS
Seventy-three reasons to aim carefully
With 73 sand hazards distributed across 18 holes, there is almost no hole at Aviara where bunkers do not influence the line. Greenside examples are deep and well-placed.
THE WATER
Lagoon echoes everywhere
Ponds, streams, and water features appear on more than half the holes, visually connecting the layout to Batiquitos Lagoon below. The 18th and 8th present the most consequential carries.
THE SETTING
Botanical precision
Aviara's landscaping — vibrant flower beds, manicured native areas, and mature trees — gives every hole a composed, almost theatrical frame. The beauty is real, and so are the distractions it creates.

Finishing Hole
Water runs the full length of the left side from tee to green on this 443-yard closing hole, with the Spanish Colonial clubhouse visible beyond the flag. A demanding drive that stays right, followed by a long approach over the water's edge, is the only reliable path home.
443 yards · Watched from the Ember & Rye terrace, it is among the more theatrical finishing holes at any California resort.
HOLE 11 · par 3 · 189y
Waterfall Par Three
One of the most photographed holes on the property, the 11th asks for a full carry over a pond framed by a waterfall and vivid flower beds. The green is wide enough to invite aggression, though short or left leaves little to work with.
189 yards · Featured in multiple 'best par 3s in California' lists and often compared to its sibling, the 3rd hole.
HOLE 14 · par 3 · 201y
Lagoon View
From an elevated tee, the golfer looks out across a large pond to the green with Batiquitos Lagoon spreading into the distance. At 201 yards it asks for a genuine long iron or hybrid under any wind, and the panorama makes it easy to lose focus.
201 yards · Eun-Hee Ji made a hole-in-one here on Sunday of the 2018 Kia Classic, winning a car before collecting a second for the title.
HOLE 8 · par 5 · 536y
Creek and Pond Par Five
A downhill par 5 with a creek crossing the fairway forces the layup decision, while a pond guarding the front of the green makes the third shot the most penal. Water appears on the left, long, and short sides of the green, rewarding only a precise wedge.
536 yards · Water hazards nearly surround the green, effectively removing the option of a careless bump-and-run from the layup zone.
HOLE 15 · par 4 · 473y
The Long Four
Often cited as the hardest hole on the card, the 15th stretches to 473 yards with no shortcut available. A long, accurate drive is still followed by a demanding mid- to long-iron to a well-bunkered green. Bogey here is frequently a good score.
473 yards · One of the longer par 4s on the LPGA tour schedule when the Kia Classic was played here.
HOLE 3 · par 3 · 149y
Palmer Bridge Hole
A short par 3 that earns its place in reference among the course's most celebrated holes — listed in '1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die' — with bunkers and colorful flowerbeds framing a pond short of the green. The Palmer Bridge, dedicated in 2016, sits just behind the hole.
149 yards · Named in '1001 Golf Holes You Must Play Before You Die'; the adjacent Palmer Bridge was christened during the course's 25th-anniversary celebration.

7 questions · sourced from 5 vlogs
How do I book a tee time at Aviara Golf Club?
Tee times can be booked directly through the club up to 60 days in advance for non-resort guests. Guests staying at the Park Hyatt Aviara Resort receive a 90-day advance booking window. Times are also available through third-party platforms such as GolfNow. Green fees for the public typically run between $305 and $410 depending on day and time.
Do I need to stay at the Park Hyatt Aviara to play the course?
No. Aviara Golf Club is open to the public. However, resort guests at the Park Hyatt Aviara receive preferential access, an earlier booking window, and generally lower green fees in the range of $150 to $350. Non-resort guests pay the public green fee rate.
Is the course walkable, or is a cart required?
Golf carts are the standard mode of play at Aviara, and the resort's practical setup assumes cart use. The terrain — with its elevation changes, downhill par 5s, and uphill par 4s — is manageable on foot, but walking policies should be confirmed directly with the pro shop before your round.
What is the dress code at Aviara Golf Club?
Aviara maintains a traditional golf dress code. Collared shirts are required on the course; denim, cargo shorts, and t-shirts are typically not permitted. Soft spikes are strongly recommended. It is worth confirming current guidelines with the club directly, as resort policies can be updated.
How difficult is Aviara compared to other resort courses in Southern California?
Aviara plays to a course rating of 75.0 and a slope of 144 from the back tees, which places it firmly at the demanding end of the resort spectrum. The oversized greens, 73 bunkers, and persistent water hazards make it more challenging than most resort layouts in the region. Mid-handicappers will find it a genuine test; beginners may struggle to keep pace.
Does Aviara host professional tournaments?
Yes. Aviara served as the home of the LPGA's Kia Classic (later the JTBC Classic) from 2013 through 2022, hosting the tour annually for nearly a decade. The course record of 62 was set by both M.J. Hur and Hyo Joo Kim during the 2019 edition of the tournament.
Is the course closed during the LPGA tournament?
The course is generally closed to public play during tournament week when the LPGA event was staged at the property. The tournament concluded its run at Aviara in 2022, so closures for that reason no longer apply. The club does still close occasionally for maintenance or private events, so checking ahead is advisable.
