The New Iron Technique Making Amateurs Look Like Tour Pros
PGA-certified instructor Alex Elliott explains why amateur golfers should stop trying to hit perfectly straight iron shots and instead learn how to intentionally hit draws and fades. Using his S.M.A.R.T. framework (Setup, Movement, Arc, Rotation, Tempo), Alex walks through step-by-step setup tweaks, swing path feels, and course management strategies to shape shots on demand and avoid hazards.
Stop trying to hit iron shots perfectly straight; learning controlled draws and fades offers a higher margin for error and better course management.
Use Alex Elliott's S.M.A.R.T. method (Setup, Movement, Arc, Rotation, Tempo) to dial in shot shape variables.
To hit a draw: position the ball slightly back, close alignment slightly right of target, feel more swing depth (in-to-out path), and rotate forearms through impact.
To hit a fade: place the ball slightly forward, align body slightly left of target, feel a slightly more upright path, and quiet the forearm rotation through impact.
Always start shot shapes over safe areas (the fat of the green) so over-shaping moves the ball closer to safety rather than into trouble.
