PGA coach Dan Grieve demonstrates three different 'releases' to navigate a tricky green-side pin tucked behind a ledge. He shows how to execute a Release 1 (9-iron chip and run), a Release 2 (mid-flight 56-degree wedge), and a Release 3 (high lob shot) to help golfers choose the best strategy for their skill level.
Use Release 1 (9-iron) for a low-spin shot that uses the natural slope of the green to feed toward the hole.
Use Release 2 (56-degree wedge) to carry obstacles mid-flight while maintaining enough spin to stop the ball within a few feet.
Use Release 3 (Lob shot) for maximum height and a vertical landing when you need the ball to stop immediately upon landing.
Evaluate the terrain (slopes and tiers) to decide which trajectory gives you the highest percentage of finishing close.
Maintain course etiquette by always replacing your divots after short game practice.
