Do This and Watch the Ball Explode Off the Clubface
PGA instructor Craig Jones demonstrates how an open clubface caused by a cupped lead wrist forces major compensations like over-the-top downswings and flippy impacts. He introduces the simple 'waiter holding a tray' feel at the top of the backswing to flatten the wrist and close the face. Combined with three subtle setup tweaks, this creates a closed-face bias that gives golfers confidence to swing from the inside and release with power.
Most over-the-top moves and flipping at impact are compensations for an open clubface at the top of the swing.
Use the 'waiter holding a tray' feel with your trail hand at the top to flatten the lead wrist and square the clubface.
Build a closed-face bias at setup with a strong grip, clubface aligned slightly left of target, and stance aligned slightly right.
A squared or slightly closed face at transition gives you the freedom to shallow the club ('skip') and achieve maximum extension ('whip').
