Golf Studio analyzes how wind velocity increases at peak ball flight altitude compared to flagstick level. The video demonstrates why playing wind strictly by the flag leads to coming up short into the wind and provides quantitative data on knockdown shots versus high full shots.
Wind at peak ball flight height (30–35 yards) is significantly stronger than at flagstick height (7–8 feet).
Into a 15 mph wind, a tour 6-iron can drop 33 yards of carry, whereas downwind only adds about 19 yards.
A low knockdown shot climbing under 41 feet loses drastically less distance into wind (8 yards short) than a high full shot climbing to 74 feet (25 yards short).
Downwind shots drop in flatter and run out more, whereas headwind shots land steep and stop quickly.
