Mike Malaska from Malaska Golf explains the true cause of a golf shank and provides an easy fix. He demonstrates that shanking occurs when the handle moves out toward the ball, driving the hosel into impact. By pulling the hands down and in during the downswing, the club face can naturally extend out to make clean contact.

• A shank happens when the ball hits the club hosel, regardless of whether the face is open or shut.
• Trying to fix a shank by twisting the face closed usually makes the shank worse.
• Pushing the club handle out toward the ball pushes the hosel directly into the hit zone.
• Fix your shank by bringing your hands down and in back to where they started, allowing the club face to extend out to the ball.
