The Golf Swing Weekly Fix Grip, Clubface and Over Swing
PGA Professional Mark Crossfield demonstrates how strong and weak grip faults cause severe compensations like early extension, hanging back, and over-rotation. He shows how adjusting your hand position allows proper clubface delivery and provides practical drills to fix path and backswing length.
A strong right-hand grip (hand too far underneath) closes the face, forcing golfers to extend early and push their hips forward to avoid hooking.
Place the right hand more on top of the grip and practice an 'exit left' swing path through impact to stop thrusting the hips toward the ball.
A weak lead-hand grip leaves the face open, causing golfers to hang back on their trail foot and pull across the target line.
To curb an overswing, restrict your shoulder rotation on the backswing to a feeling of 2 o'clock while maintaining a full, aggressive turn on the downswing.
