How Golfers Create Power from the Ground | Dr. Greg Rose TPI co-Founder
In this presentation by Smart2Move, Titleist Performance Institute (TPI) co-founder Dr. Greg Rose explains how elite golfers utilize ground reaction forces to build maximum swing power. He details the kinetic sequence—lateral force, rotational twist, and vertical jump—highlighting why force timing and impulse are more critical than peak magnitude alone.
The kinetic sequence generally follows a lateral shift, rotational twist (A-P force), and vertical jump to maximize energy transfer into the club.
Applying lateral forces earlier in the backswing increases overall impulse (force multiplied by time), allowing golfers to increase distance without needing extra physical strength.
Rotational force couples require lead-foot dominance pushing backward to rotate the lead hip back and prevent early extension.
Vertical ground force relies on an early downswing unloading/squat phase that pre-stretches leg muscles before exploding upward into impact.
Timing and sequence are far more important diagnostic metrics for power leaks than simply reaching Tour-average peak force numbers.
