95% Amateurs don’t chip like this but ALL PRO’S Do!
PGA instructor Matt Fryer breaks down the '3 L's' method (Lie, Landing zone, and Loft) that professional golfers use to hit predictable chip shots. By properly evaluating grass interaction, targeting flat spots on the green, and selecting the correct club loft, amateur golfers can lower scores without changing their physical swing.
Assess the Lie: Grass trapped between the ball and clubface in rough reduces spin and creates lower, faster rollout.
Target Flat Landing Zones: Land your ball on predictable, flat sections of the putting surface rather than fringe, rough, or slopes.
Understand Flight-to-Run Ratios: 8-iron produces roughly 30% flight and 70% run; Pitching Wedge is 50/50; Lob Wedge is 70% flight and 30% run.
Visualize with Underarm Tosses: Toss a ball underhand onto your target spot to gauge how much it bounces and rolls toward the pin.
Get the Ball Rolling Quickly: Favor getting the ball onto the putting surface as early as possible to mimic a putting roll.
