Play Smarter Golf: Course Management That Saves 5+ Shots
Mike Porzak of Porzak Golf walks through a strategic playing lesson at The Grand Golf Club to demonstrate how course management can save five or more shots per round. The video highlights specific techniques for controlling distance with 3/4 swings, reading greens from the low side, and choosing safe targets to avoid blow-up holes.
Read greens from the low side looking up to gain a clearer perspective on the slope and break compared to looking down from above.
When facing downhill lies or windy conditions, use a 3/4 knockdown technique: narrow the stance, choke down, and keep weight on the lead foot.
On long putts, shift your mindset to 'tap-in par' rather than aggressively trying to make the birdie to avoid leaving difficult comeback putts.
Prioritize putting over chipping when off the fringe if the lie is grainy or soggy, as a poor putt is usually better than a poor chip.
Use 'trimming' (shorter backswing) to control wedge distances instead of hitting full shots that may produce excessive spin on soft greens.
