PGA coach Rob Cheney explains how to stop topping hybrids and fairway woods by adjusting ball position and attack angle. He demonstrates that these clubs still require a downward strike rather than a 'sweeping' motion to ensure clean contact.
Position the ball one ball-width closer to the target for a hybrid compared to a 7-iron.
Avoid the common mistake of trying to 'sweep' the ball off the turf, which leads to fat or topped shots.
Maintain a downward attack angle into the ball, even with woods and hybrids.
Moving the ball forward reduces the steepness of the strike but should not eliminate the downward hit entirely.
