Master Your Wedges and Gain Control of Your Ball Pattern
PGA instructor George Gankas works with professional golfer Tehjas Renu to refine wedge distance control and eliminate pull misses. Gankas breaks down his clock system using variations in swing length, speed, and clubface loft. They also explore the geometry of angle of attack and swing direction to master a trustworthy push cut.
Distance with wedges is controlled by three main variables: swing length, swing speed, and clubface loft.
Utilize clock positions (8:00, 9:00, 10:00) paired with slow, medium, or fast tempos to create a complete distance matrix.
Rehearse backswing length by pausing at the top to calibrate feel before swinging.
To eliminate pull misses, align body lines slightly left while keeping the swing path coming from the inside without allowing the toe to roll past the heel.
Understand that a steeper downward angle of attack shifts the true path more to the right relative to swing direction, which can inadvertently trigger pulls if the face matches swing direction.
