The shape of it
Wedge play is the art of precision from 130 yards and in, encompassing everything from full-finessed shots to delicate greenside Chipping. Whether you’re a high-handicapper tired of "chili-dipping" or a single-digit player hunting for "up-and-downs," mastering your wedges is the fastest way to slash your handicap. We’ve all been there: you hit a beautiful drive right down the pipe, only to blade a 60-degree wedge into the woods or chunk a chip three feet in front of you. It’s the ultimate scorecard killer, and it usually stems from a fundamental misunderstanding of how the club is designed to interact with the turf.
To fix this, Malaska Golf emphasizes a "lead leg" bias, ensuring your weight stays forward to promote a crisp, downward strike. This isn't just about hitting down; it’s about controlling the low point of your swing so you stop catching it fat. Meanwhile, Dan Grieve tackles the common fear of short chips by focusing on continuous chest rotation. If your chest stops, your hands take over, and that’s when the yips invite themselves to the party. We also look at the mechanical fixes from Professional Golf Advisor, who demonstrates how to rebuild a broken chipping action from the ground up by focusing on a stable release.
These experts offer a holistic view of the short game. While Professional Golf Advisor focuses on the biomechanics of a stable strike, Golf Sidekick provides the strategic framework needed to break 85, emphasizing "non-negotiables" like smart club selection and avoiding high-lofted hero shots when a simple bump-and-run will do. These philosophies don't compete; they converge. One gives you the physical tools to strike the ball consistently, while the other gives you the mental blueprint to stop making double-bogey mistakes from the middle of the fairway.
By diving into our library of 153 videos, you’ll master specific drills like "Rungs on a Ladder" and the "Find Your 50" challenge. You’ll learn why deceleration is your worst enemy and how to use the bounce of your wedge as a safety net rather than a trampoline. Bookmark this page as your go-to resource for turning the scoring zone into your greatest competitive advantage. Let’s get to work and start sticking those wedges close.

From the videos
To eliminate the chipping yips, focus on a stable release that prevents the lead wrist from collapsing.
It stabilizes the clubhead and prevents the leading edge from digging or blading the ball.
Maintain constant chest rotation through the impact zone on short chips to avoid deceleration.
Stopping the chest forces the hands to take over, leading to inconsistent strikes and 'stalling'.
Adopt a 'Non-Negotiable' strategy by choosing the lowest lofted club possible for the shot at hand.
Lower lofted clubs have a larger margin for error and get the ball rolling sooner, which is easier to control.
Asked and answered
This usually happens because your weight is shifting to your back foot or your chest stops rotating. Try playing the ball in the center of your stance and keeping your weight on your lead leg throughout the swing, as suggested by Malaska Golf.
Thin or bladed shots often occur when you try to 'help' the ball into the air. Focus on hitting down slightly and letting the loft of the club do the work. Avoid trying to take a divot after the ball on short pitches, as this often leads to a shallow, bladed strike.
Use the 'Rungs on a Ladder' drill. Place targets (or towels) at 5-yard increments. Focus on landing the ball on each 'rung' successively. This builds the 'feel' for swing length and tempo without needing a full range.
Only use the 60-degree when you have very little green to work with or need to clear an obstacle. For most standard Chipping situations, a lower lofted club like a 52-degree or even a 9-iron is safer and more predictable.
