Watch / the round template
Before you book it, watch someone walk it — hole by hole, with the shots that actually matter.
Each round is mapped to its holes, so you can jump to the one you care about.
The shape of it
Imagine standing on the first tee at Chambers Bay, the salt air of the Puget Sound hitting your face as you look out over a landscape that feels more like the Scottish Highlands than the Pacific Northwest. There’s something visceral about playing a course that challenges your imagination, where the fescue ripples in the wind and every undulating green tells a story of triumph or heartbreak. These aren't just rounds of golf; they are pilgrimages to the cathedrals of the game, where the atmosphere is as much a part of the scorecard as the strokes themselves.
Whether you're navigating the daunting "Church Pews" at Oakmont or tackling the desert beauty of Mac Boucher Golf's "Mac 9" at Rams Hill, the experience is electric. I recently watched PerfectlyAverageGolf take on the massive dunes in Can an 8 Handicap BREAK 80 at CHAMBERS BAY?, proving that even a mid-handicapper can find magic in the sand. Every hole offers a unique puzzle, like the tucked pins at Oakmont that demand surgical precision or the firm, fast greens that turn a simple approach into a high-stakes chess match.
To truly enjoy these bucket-list destinations, you have to respect the conditions. Expect firm, fast surfaces that require you to play the ground game, especially when the wind kicks up. At places like Chambers Bay, walkability is a key part of the experience, though it’s a physical test as much as a mental one. Booking early is essential, particularly for world-class venues, and understanding the local nuances—like the specific art of hand-raking bunkers or spotting Poa on bent grass greens—can deepen your appreciation for the craft behind the course.
Golf travel is about the memories made between the shots and the stories shared at the 19th hole. From the pristine fairways of a home course in Sweden featured by Marcus Edblad PGA Pro to the rugged coastline of major championship venues, there is a world of adventure waiting for you. It's time to pack your bags, polish your wedges, and discover the next legendary course that will define your golfing journey.

From the videos
When the pin is tucked on the left side of the green on hole #2 at Oakmont, do not hit the ball even half a yard past 115 yards.
The back bunker at Oakmont is notoriously punishing; being long is a guaranteed 'dead' position that makes saving par nearly impossible.
Paige Spiranac
On a 290-yard hole where the landing area is unknown, driver is often not the smart shot.
Playing for position rather than distance prevents 'shortsighted' mistakes that lead to big numbers on the scorecard.
PerfectlyAverageGolf
For firm desert greens, tee the ball high when hitting a 7-wood and hit down on it.
This creates maximum lift and spin, allowing the ball to land softer on surfaces that otherwise wouldn't hold a long iron.
Mac Boucher Golf
Don't overthink putts by looking at them from multiple angles; trust your first instinct.
Over-analyzing often leads to 'paralysis by analysis' and a lack of commitment to the line.

Asked and answered
It is a significant challenge due to the elevation changes and massive bunkers. However, as seen in PerfectlyAverageGolf's journey, playing for position and avoiding the 'big miss' makes it manageable and highly rewarding.
Oakmont is a traditional walking course, and to get the full experience—including navigating the famous Church Pews—walking with a caddie is highly recommended to understand the complex lines and history.
Expect very firm and fast conditions. As Mac Boucher Golf demonstrates, you often need to use higher-launching clubs or play for the roll-out to keep the ball on the green.
Poa can make greens bumpy, especially in the afternoon. Look for the lime-green patches mentioned by Fried Egg Golf and expect the ball to bobble slightly more than on pure bent grass.
